Our second “Pizza by the Pool” party on July 10 was another huge success with almost 160 registered attendees.  The party started with two hours of water related fun and games for our 2 – 12 year old residents and guests.  Margie Pettersen and her volunteer helpers led about three dozen children, grand children, nieces and nephews through a variety of water related games from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. before everyone enjoyed pizza at the picnic area.

A resident asked the Board to remind everyone that, according to our DOR (Section 6, #8), “No vehicles shall be parked on any street or on any buffer zone without Association approval, except for vehicles owned by visitors or short term guests.” In other words, our buffer zones really should not be routinely used as overflow parking areas for residents' vehicles.

Vaughn MacEntee has volunteered to loan our residents a computer.  He will install it in the “board room” (the room next to the kitchen) and you will be able to access the internet!  Vaughn is also considering conducting a VERY BASIC class about “Using the computer for the extremely technologically challenged”.  Can SKYPING with the grand kids be next? THANK YOU, VAUGHN!

Kerry Jarrell reported that the independent auditors have completed their preliminary review of our financial records and have reported no problems.

Phyllis Hartley, Joanne Bendy, Al Franklin and Pete Gulliver met with two landscape designers in order to discuss improvements to the flower beds around the club house and the “Town Sign”.  Phyllis and Joanne will review the proposals and discuss them with the Board at our September meeting.

Al Franklin secured the necessary tree removal permits from both the Town of Carolina Shores and our own ACC in order to remove the trees identified as diseased by the ISA certified arborist.  After soliciting bids from several tree removal companies, he has awarded the job and the work may be underway in the next week or two.

We are interested in hiring an entertainer for the 2013 Holiday Party.  The party will be held between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on December 14, 2013.  If you would like to be considered, please provide the business office with an audition tape and a list of upcoming scheduled appearances prior to August 15, 2013.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS.

The POA Children’s Pool Party, followed by our second Pizza Party, were both huge successes as expressed by all those in attendance on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.  Organized and led by member, Margie Pettersen, with the assistance of Kathie Gulliver, Jane Boyle, Jeanne Paff, and Kayla (Flo & Dave Pflaster’s granddaughter), thirty-five children participated in various pool games from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. with prizes being awarded afterward.  They and a huge turnout of community members were then treated to pizza and ice cream from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  All attending enjoyed socializing with their friends and neighbors on a sunny, breezy evening.

Congratulations Linda Rugg

Congratulations are in order for Joe Fioravanti.  He has written and published his first book, The Chameleon.  The Chameleon is about two police officers and their day to day service to the community.  It has both drama and humor.  Joe started writing with a course in creative writing at Brunswick Community College.  He admits this was hard work, but he enjoyed it none the less.  Call Joe at 575-3974 for a copy of his book.  More information is in the Sales and Service section.

Joe and his wife, Marianne, fell in love with Carolina Shores and  have been residents for 10 years.

Book Discussion Group – Margie Pettersen

A lively discussion was held at our July 19, 2013 meeting to discuss our book selections, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot and “A Good Hard Look” by Ann Napolitano. Those who read the book by Napolitano were dismayed to find the author, Flannery O’Connor, was fictionalized and cast into a novel.  Readers were made to believe that the events and actions were based on her actual life, when in fact, the story was one of complete invention and some of the actions were not in character with O’Connor’s life.

Most people were amazed at the story of Henrietta Lacks and how her cancer cells were used to develop the polio vaccine, cures for TB, and chemotherapy.  We also discussed segregation in the 1950s and the insights into life in the ghettoes of Baltimore.

At our next meeting on August 16, 2013, we will discuss two books, “The Cove” by Ron Rash and “Hummingbird’s Daughter” by Luis Umberto Urrea.  Members may read one or both books.

We will also be selecting books for the next year, so please bring your suggestions or contact Pat McKay.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you!

New Friends Flo Pflaster

Margie Pettersen led the June meeting, which was held at Ruby Tuesdays.  About 25 women enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by attending the movies.  We had great laughs watching “The Heat”.

Margie asked the group to think about a name change for this monthly gathering.  Some feel that the current name does not fully describe our get togethers.

Activities planned for future gatherings are:

August 13—Beach party hosted by Barbara Jones.  Instead of a morning meeting, we will meet near the pier at Sunset Beach at 5:30 p.m.  Bring whatever you want to eat and drink, chairs and any games you want to play.

September 10-recipe sharing hosted by Marlene Stewart.

October 8—Outing to the Grapeful Sisters winery hosted by Charlotte Csernecky.

November 12—Theater outing hosted by Maslin Kain.

Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!

New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced. Everyone is welcome.  You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.

Sunday Scramble--Diana Mardall

After several more inches of rain on Saturday, July 13, 2013, it was decided to cancel the Scramble outing on the following Sunday at Oyster Bay.  Although Sunday was bright and sunny, I’m sure the course would still have been very wet.

On August 11, 2013 we’re playing at Sea Trail, The Byrd Course.  The first tee time is 8:31 a.m. and the cost is $35.  Karen Hertling and Martha Hannon will be hosting.  The signup sheet has been posted on the temporary bulletin board in the POA clubhouse.

New members are always welcome.  If you would like a “test run” of the group prior to joining (our annual dues are $12 per player), please call Diana Mardall at 910-575-7804.

Tennis News Bob Anthony

Have you had enough rain yet?  It seems we are cancelling more tennis matches than we are playing.  As the summer weather morphs into "Air-You Can-Wear", open tennis continues strong every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 8:30 a.m.  Hope to see you out there.

On a sad note, the tennis community lost another of its faithful with the passing of Jim McNamara.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Joan and the entire McNamara family.
