Our third annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was held at Patios for the second year and was once again a huge success.  Our community honored 51 volunteers and their guests who represented a total of more than 3000 volunteer hours.  Excluding our POA board members, the volunteer who donated the most hours in 2012 is Tommi Whitfield. Tommi leads the Tai Chai classes at the club house.  Her classes are so popular there’s a waiting list!

Pizza by the Pool is back by popular demand!  Margie Pettersen has agreed to organize two pizza parties in the picnic area by the pool.  Check elsewhere in the bulletin for details.

Our club house facelift is well underway.  As of the date of this article the walls and ceiling in the main room and kitchen are painted, the floor in the main room is replaced and the baseboards in the main room are painted and replaced, the floor in the kitchen and bathrooms and new baseboards for the bathrooms are replaced.  Tasks scheduled to be completed by the end of May include removal of the door between the “board room” and the main room, insulating, sheet rocking and painting the original storage room, and replacing the bathroom vanities with ADA compliant vanities. The House Committee and the Board appreciates your patience during the construction process.

Al Franklin and I met with Phyllis Hartley and Joanne Bendy who serve on the garden club beautification committee. One of the items we discussed was giving the outside of our club house and “Town Wall” area (the flower bed at the intersection of Country Club and Rt. 179 ) a facelift to go along with the facelift we are giving the inside of our clubhouse. We all agreed that it might be time to seek some professional help.  In order to accomplish that, Al, Phyllis and Joanne are going to interview a landscape architect in order to develop a landscape plan for the beds around the building and the “Town Wall”.

Our business office wants to make sure we can reach every resident in every possible way, especially if there is an emergency.  You are encouraged to give us more than one email address per household.  The business office DOES NOT intend to loan, sell, swap or share the email list.

Please be patient with us - In the next several weeks we will send out a test message or two and it is possible that we may have duplicate email addresses or we may have missed someone.

Recreation Committee Pat McKay

Beautiful blue skies and bright sunshine greeted our residents as they attended our POA Annual Picnic on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at 12:00 noon.  There were three tents set up encompassing our food (grills, tables with paper products and condiments, community sharing table).  Food offerings included the usual hot dogs, sauerkraut, beans, onions, ice cream, and new this year were pulled pork sandwiches and chili. Soft drinks and water completed our menu.

In addition to the delicious food choices, games were set up and played.  They included bocce, putting contest and bingo.  Raffle tickets were sold, and winners announced.  It was a perfect day to socialize with your neighbors and friends as it was much cooler than last year’s picnic!

All of this activity was due to many months of planning and execution on the part of our community’s Recreation Committee consisting of Co-Chairs Jeanne and Joe Zalasko, Board Liaison Mike Riccitelli, JoAnn and Jack Bendy, Merrilee Burns, Lillian Capuano, Eileen Nawara, Pat McKay, Ron Pecina and Margie Pettersen.  Also there were so many wonderful volunteers who set and cleaned up, assisted with registration, raffles and game sign-ups, game leaders and officials.  Our President, Pete Gulliver, welcomed everyone and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Moment of Silent Meditation for absent family and friends.  A special thank you is offered to all who helped make this annual day as special as it could be!

Please check elsewhere in our bulletin for some other activities the committee is planning, including two summer pizza parties. We are also planning our December Holiday Party.

Garden Club NewsRosemary Connell

Garden Club ends their year with a BANG!  If you were lucky enough to have a ticket for the May “Tablescapes” luncheon, then you were lucky enough.  The Garden Club outdid themselves decorating 11 different tables in various themes including:  "Mardi Gras", "Putting on the Ritz", "Shipwrecked", "In the Garden", "Birds, Bees and Fireflies", "Butterfly Garden", "Graduation", "Birds of a Feather", "Happy 'Holly' Days", "Teahouse of the August Moon" and "Black and White Wedding."

A delicious luncheon was served by the Purple Onion's catering group, ART.  We all enjoyed the music and lovely voice of Elizabeth Holt.  Every year the Garden Club gives scholarships to deserving students from West Brunswick High School.  This year we were joined by five scholarship recipients and their advisor.  We listened to OOH’s and AAH’s, Beautiful, Wow, This room never looked so great, Magnificent and many other compliments from our fellow guests.  A big thank you to Linda Rugg and Kathy Harniman and the many hostesses that made this event a great success.

The Garden Club will be taking the summer off and hope you will join us in September as we begin a new and exciting year.

Book Discussion GroupMargie Pettersen

A lively discussion was held among the members present at our May 17, 2013 meeting.   We met at the Hickmans Crossroads library to discuss our book selection, “The Accident”, by Linwood Barclay.

“The Accident” is a murder mystery with twists and turns that keep you turning the page.  When Glen Garber’s wife, Sheila, is killed in a car accident, he decides to investigate and uncovers some ugly truths about his neighbors who are desperately trying to cover up a dangerous secret.  Readers were also invited to share other titles that they read by this author.  Not everyone liked this genre, but all agreed that Barclay’s books are exciting and will hold your interest throughout.

At our next meeting on June 21, 2013, we will discuss two historical fiction books, "The Ocean Forest, A Murder in Myrtle Beach” by local author Troy Nooe and “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain.  Members are reminded to start thinking about books to recommend to the group since we will be generating a new list of books to read at our August meeting.  In addition, the group is looking forward to meeting with local author, Joan Leotta, who will speak to the group in the fall about her book, “Guilia Goes to War.”

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you!

New Friends Barbara Roth

On Tuesday, May 13, 2013, the New Friends ladies met at La Belle Amie winery to enjoy a day of touring and sampling.  The owner of the winery told all about how she started the winery and gave an informative tour.  Our meeting then took place on their patio after we enjoyed socializing over our brown bag lunch.  Topics covered were future plans and change of name that informs people that it a club for all, not just new.

The June 11, 2013 meeting  will be hosted by Lil Capuano and will be a purse exchange.  So clean out your closet and bring them along and trade it for someone else's discard.  Any purses left will go to a thrift store that supports charity.  Come prepared  to share ideas for future events.

On July 9, 2013 Margie Pettersen will host a trip to the movies.  The theater runs "Oldies" at discounted admission along with popcorn and drinks at special senior rates.  She will announce her findings at the June meeting.  Lunch will most likely be at the food court and those who wish can shop the mall before or after the movie.

August and September are open for suggestion

October will be on a Thursday at the Grapeful Sisters winery as they do not have availability on Tuesdays.  It will be either the 3rd or 10th of October and will include lunch at the winery.  Cost will be approximately $16.00 depending on what options you choose.

Come and join us for an eventful activity schedule and warm friendship.

Sunday Scramble--Diana Mardall

The Carolina Shores Sunday Scramble Group played at Lockwood Folly on May 5, 2013.  We had two people who got lost trying to find the course (they showed up in time to play), and one lady who was trying to follow her teammates to the clubhouse when we got rained out, but her teammates took off (must have had a souped-up cart) and she “lost” her men, ended up following the wrong cart.  I’m sure those players, who weren’t part of our group, were very surprised to see a strange lady careening down the fairway towards them!

Some of us got rained out, one stalwart group played on (Joe, Laura, Karen and Dee) and played all eighteen.  Prize money was awarded on the results of the first nine holes, which all teams finished.  Winners were:  1st  - Team #3, Elaine Southard, Will Groner, Frank Pritchett; 2nd - Team #1, Susan Jarrell, Diana Mardall, Mal MacRaild; and 3rd - Team #4, Carol Groner, Bill Southard, John Kain.

Next month we’re playing at Lion’s Paw at Ocean Ridge Plantation.  First tee time is 8:44 a.m. and cost is $35.  Hosts will be Diana Mardall and Joe Gallo.  Not sure if the signup sheet will be back in the POA, otherwise if you want to sign up, call Diana or Joe.  After golf we’ll enjoy a late lunch and well earned libations at Tamer’s (in the Lion’s Paw clubhouse).

New members are always welcome.  If you would like a “test run” of the group prior to joining (our annual dues are $12 per player), please call Diana Mardall at 910-575-7804 or put your name on the signup sheet at the POA clubhouse.
