SUSPENDED RESIDENTS

The following property owners have been suspended from membership for non-payment of dues and assessments. They are not permitted to use any amenities or attend POA sponsored functions either as a member or as a guest of a member.  In order to protect your financial interest in our membership corporation, liens have been filed against their property with the Brunswick County Clerk’s Office.  The liens are public documents:

After almost seven years, the Nominating Committee, past board members, present board members and prospective board members have come to the realization that under the present circumstances serving as a member of the POA Board of Directors has become not only an almost full time job, but a position in which one is expected to stoically accept sometimes ill informed criticism and abuse from an extremely small, but extremely vocal segment of our community.  Two recurring themes seem to be present in all discussions concerning serving on our Board:

1.  The Amount of Work and the Time Commitment Required of a Board Member.  Our community started out in the 1970s with fewer than 200 homes and more than 1000 vacant lots.  Today we have nearly 1000 homes and barely 200 vacant lots. The Board is essentially running a full-time business with two part-time administrative staff.  The proper role of a Board of Directors is setting policy and overseeing its implementation.  Our Board has to both set the policy and then have to DO all the implementation.  This includes:  all financial activities (tax returns, billing and debt collection, budget management, etc.); maintenance activities (from changing light bulbs and cleaning out the refrigerator to hiring and overseeing all contractors, buying and installing new equipment, and fixing anything that breaks); all record keeping (human resources, membership data, legal actions, how-to instructions for all POA equipment; minutes of meetings, and Board files); oversight and enforcement of the Deed of Restrictions (including new and remodeling construction projects, response to member complaints, and working with Town officials); recruiting and coordinating all volunteers for Board Standing Committees; communicating with POA members (setting agendas and running meetings, putting information into the Bulletin and the web site; writing all-member mailings, maintaining the member email list, taking and distributing minutes of Board meetings); providing POA social events and a myriad of other activities.  Doing all this work takes a commitment from each Board member of at least 15-20 hours a week.   This is a big chunk of anyone’s life!

2. Mistreatment and Abuse Received From Fellow POA Members.  About 1-2% of all people who ever were CSPOA members have served on the Board, but 100% of our members have clear and strong opinions about how this community should be run and they are not shy about sharing their opinions.   Many members are very good about submitting constructive ideas and offering to help implement them.   But a significant minority feel free to make angry phone calls to the homes of Board members at all hours of the day and night or speak loudly and unpleasantly to Board members at social events and come to the office to literally yell at a Board member about a real or imaginary issue.  Board members welcome input from members – whether it’s a good idea or a problem, but there are appropriate ways to do this, and waking someone up, interrupting private time and meal time with family members, or ruining a day at a social event or the pool is unkind and unnecessary.   Unfortunately a few of our residents even assume that, once elected, Board members become their personal servants.  Why would any reasonable person want an unpaid 20-hour a week job where people treat you badly?

Your Board members believe it is time for our community to make a financial commitment to enhanced Business Office support in order to oversee the day-to-day operations of our POA, and allow the Board to assume it's appropriate role of setting policy and doing oversight of the paid professionals.  This would allow us to attract and keep the best possible Board members and it would allow the Board to spend more time on planning for the future.

In our September Message From the Board we advised you about a redefined standard for new construction of headwalls.  We've had some questions about why your board redefined this standard.   One reason was to save our residents some expense if their driveway head wall was being removed and replaced as an adjunct to a Town initiated repaving or storm water management improvement.   On a case-by-case basis the Town of Carolina Shores is willing to replace headwalls, at Town expense, with a functional but perhaps far less aesthetically appealing headwall UNLESS the community has a higher standard in place.  Without having a standard in place the homeowner bears the financial responsibility for the cost of any “upgrades” beyond the “base model headwall”.  Your board followed the lead taken by the Village at Calabash POA that has a brick fascia standard for headwalls in place.

 

SECOND REMINDER: As part of our ongoing Business Office records retention and automation project Merrilee Burns, Linda Rugg and others have continued to scan our ACC documents.  We are once again offering the POA's copies of house plans and plot plans to the current property owners who live on the following streets:

Last Day For Free Soil Tests is November 18 John Doherty and Pete Gulliver

 

For the period from December through March, there will be a $4 fee per soil sample. The fee is an attempt to lessen the backlog associated with the busy season when the lab is routinely inundated with tens of thousands of samples. As of now commencing in April, NC State will continue to analyze soil samples without a fee.  In order to get your soil sample to the lab before the November 30 cutoff date, all samples must be at the POA Business Office by November 18.

Did you ever wonder why your neighbor’s shrubs have more flowers than yours? Did you ever wonder why the lawn across the street looks thicker and healthier that yours?

The answer may be simple.  Perhaps your neighbors had their soil tested and are now providing an optimized growing environment for their lawns and shrubs.  Although you most likely may want to wait until nest Spring to follow the fertilization recommendation, now is the ideal time to adjust your soil pH.

The procedure is almost painless:

  1. Pick up an instruction sheet, the soil sample box(es) and the Soil Sample Information Sheet at the POA Business Office.  BY THE WAY, YOU DO NOT NEED MORE THAN ONE SAMPLE OF THE SAME AREA.      
  2. Follow the instructions and fill the soil sample box with your soil sample, complete the Soil Sample Information Sheet and return both to the POA Business Office.
  3. ON TUESDAY MORNINGS we take your soil sample(s) and your Soil Sample Information Sheet to the Cooperative Extension Office in Bolivia (from there it goes to NC State in Raleigh for analysis).
  4. NC State tests your soil samples and emails their recommendations for the proper amount of fertilizer, lime, etc. to you.
  5. As NC certified Master Gardeners, we can help you turn a possibly confusing set of recommendations into “homeowner-speak”.

The 22nd Annual Holly Days Arts & Crafts Show takes place in Southport on Saturday, November 2,  2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Southport City Gym on 211 Atlantic Avenue, Southport, NC 28461.

 Our annual Soup and Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse.  This year we will also have local craft vendors selling their wares!  If you have never attended this event, it is well worth your time.   Grab some pies and desserts for Thanksgiving and come and socialize with your neighbors!

North Myrtle Beach Christmas Cantata Jill Binseel

 

Several members of our community are singing with the North Myrtle Beach All City Choir.  They will be performing “Journey of Hope - The Birth of the Savior” on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, 6th Avenue, N. Myrtle Beach.  The performance is free, but tickets are required.  Tickets may be acquired at the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Book Discussion Group – Pat McKay

A very lively discussion took place among our members at our October 18, 2013 meeting as we shared our thoughts about “That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor" by Anne Sebba. Everyone remembers the story of the king (Edward VIII) who abdicated his throne to marry the ‘love of his life’!  Well, after reading this book, we all questioned whether this ‘love’ was reciprocated!  So much history, politics, court life permeated this book about this famous/infamous woman that it made for fascinating, interesting reading of just one of many books on this subject.

 

After our discussion, our guest author, Joan Leotta, spoke to us at length about her life....background, inspirations, accomplishments.  She was a delightful, interesting, warm woman who we all found so enjoyable!  We feted her with a lovely, small reception afterward and continued our conversations and sharing.  We hope to have her visit our group again sometime and wish her continued success with her publications.

 

For our November 15, 2013 meeting we will discuss two selections:  "Wench: A Novel" by Dolen Perkins-Valdez and “Wild: From Lost to Found On the Pacific Coast Trail” by Cheryl Strayed.

Garden Club NewsRosemary Connell

 

Our October meeting started off with an interesting and informative presentation by Kimberly Thompson from Brunswick County.   She highlighted the many virtues of recycling such as:  saving natural resources, conserving energy, creating jobs, and saving money.   Kimberly brought along pamphlets for our Garden Club members.  If you would like to receive an emailed copy of the Keep Brunswick County Beautiful/Brunswick County recycling newsletter, send your email address to kthompson@brunsco.net.

 

Other News from our club:  Margie Petterson talked about our Soup and Bake Sale to be held on November 23, 2013.  This is a popular event here in Carolina Shores; watch for more information.  There will be vendors this year as well. 

 

Our Christmas party will be held on December 11, 2013 at Brunswick Plantation.  Tickets will be available at the November meeting. 

 

Our Scholarship Luncheon and Card Party is being hosted by Elaine Southard and will be held on February 12, 2014

at the Surf Club.  Tickets are $21.00.  This fun event is open to all.

 

As always we enjoyed wonderful homemade baked goods provided by our members.  Come and join us at our November meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m.  Visitors are always welcome.

 

                                                                       

 

Needlework NewsMargie Pettersen

 

The Needlework group assembled at the POA clubhouse on Monday, October 14, 2013.  This group meets on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit (or crochet).  We stop at 11:30 a.m. to eat our bag lunches and share a dessert brought by a member.  We have no officers or dues and you’ll find us around the table chatting and working.  We welcome donations of yarn or needlework supplies of any kind and use the donated yarn for some of our charitable works.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help with knitting, crocheting, or needlework crafts.  Our next meeting will be on November 11, 2013.  Eileen Nawara will provide the dessert.

Carolina Shores Quilting Guild Nancy Sneska and Becky Ream

At the October meeting it was reported that 72 quilts plus other items such as a hand knitted sweater, toiletries and pop tops were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Raleigh Durham.  Also, 29 teddy bears were given to the Brunswick Hospital.  The Ronald McDonald house is the guild’s ongoing charity.  

 

Carla Urban and Barbara Roth were welcomed as new members.  The guild currently has 34 members.  There was discussion regarding the challenge in May for the Oak Island quilters’ luncheon following the theme of “Hooray for the Red, White and Blue”.

 

Our next business meeting will be at the POA clubhouse on November 8, 2013 beginning at 9:30 a.m.  The program will be a ‘round robin’ with instructions on appliqué, and machine quilting .  There will also be a swap table of fabrics and quilt related items.

 

The guild welcomes guests and new members.  Experience at quilting is not required as there are many members ready to help with instruction.

Renegade News Debbie Creamer

The Fall Getaway was held on September 24-26, 2013.  The winners for the first day at Patriots Point Links on Charleston Harbor for the team game (Total Gross for Team Minus Handicap) were: Dolores Sanborn, Don Rose, Betty Johnston and Tom Nally, score of 315.  The Second day was played at The Links at Stono Ferry, Hollywood, SC.  The team game was 2 Low Net.  Winners were Lois Howard, Debbie O’Dell, Tom Nally, and Harry Creamer 151.  Closest to pin for Women was Debbie Creamer and Men was Don Rose.  See below group picture:

We celebrated our Pretty and Pink Tournament on Thursday, October 10, 2013.  Thanks to Carolyn Bosman and Geri McTighe for planning this wonderful event.  The game was a team game, “Las Vegas Scramble”.  First place Winners were:  Sally Nolan, Pat Soule, Sue Hensler and Dottie Meader.  We finished this event with lunch and a 50/50 raffle drawing.  Gloria Crane was the lucky winner.  See above picture of winners:  Left to right Sally Nolan, Pat Soule, Sue

Hope Harbor golf day was postponed to November 4, 2013 because of the weather.

The Christmas golf tournament and dinner will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013.  Golf will be played at Heather Glenns and dinner at the Parson’s Table.  Please see bulletin board at the Golf Pro Shop for more details.  Sharon Clark and Kathy Harniman will be hosting this event.

The annual luncheon meeting will be held at Brick Landing on January 25, 2014.

Sunday Scramble--Diana Mardall

The Carolina Shores Sunday Scramble Group had 25 players at Brunswick Plantation (Magnolia and Dogwood courses) on October 13, 2013, hosted by Bill and Teddy Altreuter.  We welcomed Steve and Maggie Coulman back from their summer in Vermont.  Bill and Teddy arranged for beautiful weather for us to play our scramble and the winners were:

Closest to the pin was won by Bill Southard for the men, and unfortunately, we ladies couldn’t come through and get a ball on the green!  We’ll do better next time.

 

Next month we play on November 10, 2013 at The Pearl, East Course; first tee time is 9:00 a.m.  Cost will be $35 and the sign up sheet is on the temporary (I hope) bulletin board on the easel in the POA meeting room.  Steve and Maggie Coulman are hosting.

 

I had some complaints from players last month about too long and too many “gimmes” being taken by some teams/players. If the ball is more than 12” from the hole, putt!

 

Don’t forget to let Joe or me have your ideas for courses to play in 2014.  If we don’t hear from you, Joe DOG will make the decision on which courses to play (presuming he will take on this challenging task again in 2014).

Robert "Bobby" and Brenda Hollyfield are from Boonville, NC.  Bobby was with R J Reynolds Tobacco for 38 1/2 years and for the last four years was a GED instructor for Surry Community College.  Brenda will retire in January.   She is a music teacher at Starmount High School.  Bobby enjoys reading and high school and college football.  Brenda loves cooking and family.  They have two children - a son living in Ocean Isle Beach and a daughter in Ashville.  Brenda and Bobby, looking to move to the beach, found this home (which they love) and felt that our area is an ideal and convenient location for them.
