***REMINDER***

Our annual meeting is on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 3:00 p.m.  This is our opportunity for board members to report to the membership, for the board to discuss their goals for 2014 and to answer questions.  In addition, we will hold an election to fill the three vacant seats on the POA board.  YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A BALLOT AND PROXY STATEMENT BY MAIL – PLEASE FILL IT OUT AND RETURN IT.

Our club house has a new floor and tables and chairs!  Our house committee members and members of the board

have devoted many hours to this project and the result of their diligence can be seen.  The “to do” list, which should be completed in the next few weeks, includes recovering the valances, hanging the re-framed pictures, installing the new buffet counter and installing sound absorbing panels.  A special thanks goes to Linda Rugg who has spent countless hours keeping track of this project.

In compliance with the POA's mowing agreement with The Town, our community has been reimbursed for $4200 for the 9 months of grounds maintenance performed in 2013 on the Town's property within our community.  The Board determined that an appropriate use of this money would be to pay for landscaping enhancements around our club house. Phase one of the three phase project was completed in November and phase two is planned for this Spring.  This project is being accomplished through the efforts of Joanne Bendy, Phyllis Hartley and Al Franklin.

Our House Committee has asked me to advise everyone that we now have a small and easy to operate vacuum cleaner available at the club house.  It is much easier for members of your group to assist in maintaining our newly renovated club house.  Crumbs left on the floor are not only unsightly, but they can cause an ant infestation.

Board members Linda Pennington and Mike Riccitelli are retiring after several years of tireless community service. Please extend a “thank you” to Linda and Mike.

Mike Riccitelli would like to take this opportunity to:

Thank each and every board member I served with for the last 4 years and to share some observations with our residents. It was a pure pleasure serving on the board.  The things that we accomplished are numerous.  Just to list a few:  new sand filters for the pool, new motors and piping for the pool, doing the pool deck and the inside of the pool over, new Bocce courts, two new handicap ramps, etc.

I'd like to wish the board health and luck on your continuing success.  I wish the best for Joyce and Marlene on being elected to the board.  You two are very lucky to have the present board members to serve with.  I'd like to thank all my committees I served with (Recreation, Communications, Advisory).  I'd also like to thank Merrilee Burns and Linda Rugg for all their help and support.

Lastly, I'd like to ask all property owners to volunteer for any and all positions that are open.  The Board of Directors put in countless hours (which they receive no salary) to make Carolina Shores a place people are proud to live in.  Without volunteers we will have to hire a management team. If that happens our dues will be a lot more.  And, I know for a fact, we (property owners) will never get the support that we receive now.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Yours truly,

Mike Riccitelli

Needlework NewsMargie Pettersen

The Needlework group assembled at the POA clubhouse in the boardroom on Monday, January 13, 2014.  This group meets on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit or crochet. We always appreciate donations of yarn to be used for our charitable works.  We’d like to extend a big “thank you” to Joyce Dunn who recently donated yarn to the group.  Call Margie Pettersen at 860-307-3175 if you have yarn to donate.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help.  After we meet, we eat our bag lunches and share a dessert.  Flo Zydzik will be providing dessert at our next meeting, February 10, 2014.

Please note: this group meets in the POA boardroom so as not to interfere with the exercise group in progress.  Please enter through the POA office

New Friends Flo Pflaster

Joyce Dunn led our January meeting at Sunrise Pancake House in Calabash.  We had a great time with activities planned by Joyce to talk to each other in various groups based on where we grew up and our hobbies and interests.  We got to know the individuals a lot more this way!  We also had a great lunch.

We got updates and information about what is happening around our neighborhood. We were informed that our own Mary Pritchard has been hospitalized.  We all wish her well.

Mary Anne Ketcham asked how we can insure adequate communication to residents without computers and several suggestions were made.  Maslin Kain asked for a few volunteers to help develop a system to assist people in need during emergencies.

Maslin also discussed AARP’s role in helping people with filing their annual taxes.  Trained volunteers are at the Hickman Library at scheduled times beginning in February, and will e-file most uncomplicated forms.

The group was reminded that the annual POA meeting and Board election takes place on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse.

Several members discussed outings and trips they would like to participate in.  All that’s needed are some planners!

Joyce Dunn has been in contact with Brunswick Electric who is willing to send a speaker to our next meeting to discuss ways to reduce our electricity bills.  Joyce Disano offered to lead the February meeting.

Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!  New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced. Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.  Please remember to bring a non perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.

New Horizons SinglesBetty Bond

We had a short, but enjoyable meeting on January 14, 2014.  The food was exceptionally good, dues were collected, and we have a new coordinator.  Alice Johnson volunteered to be coordinator for 2014.  Thank you, Alice; we appreciate your taking the position.  Our thanks to Madeline Mahony for serving this past year.  We welcomed Jean Mann to our group and hope she will continue to attend our meetings.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at the POA clubhouse at 5:00 p.m.  Madeline Mahony and I will have some trivia games to play; we will try to keep you entertained.  Of course there will be prizes, so come prepared to think!

Anyone who missed the January meeting, please bring your $5.00 dues with you.

Book Discussion Group – Margie Pettersen

A lively discussion was held at our January 17, 2014 meeting to discuss our book selections:  And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, and Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran.  Although many of us had read and enjoyed previous books by Hosseini, most agreed that this was not up to par to his previous books and were disappointed that the book was disjointed and shifted between characters too much.  However, the book by Michelle Moran was enthusiastically received and received high praise from its readers.  Everyone agreed that they learned a great deal about the French Revolution, French society, and the creation of wax sculptures by Marie Grosholtz (Tussaud), who later became famous around the world for her art.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a potluck luncheon in the newly decorated POA community room.  At our next meeting on March 21, 2014 we will discuss February - Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue or Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.

Carolina Shores Quilting Guild Nancy Sneska

This month on January 10, the Carolina Shores Quilt Guild went on a shop hop.  A number of members met at the Carolina Shores Town Hall.  We visited Quilting in the Carolinas and The Quilter's Cottage.  Members went to the Dead Dog Saloon and enjoyed lunch.  A short business meeting was conducted before lunch.  Several upcoming quilting events were mentioned.

Anyone interested in finding out more about our quilt group should attend our monthly meeting on the second Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m.  Experience in quilting is not required.  There are members ready to help with instruction.  (The Quilt group will have its business meeting the 4th Friday of February instead of the usual 2nd Friday due to a conflict in planning.)

Sunday Scramble--Diana Mardall

We had 18 players venture out to the Scramble Group’s first outing in 2014 on January 12 at Carolina Shores.  It was very wet and muddy, but we all had a good time, the sun was shining, and by the time we finished, it had warmed up nicely.  A late lunch at Mulligan’s rounded out the day.  Thank you Carol and Will Groner for hosting.

Winners were:  1st – Mal MacRaild, Bob Bosman and Joyce Dunn; 2nd – Frank Pritchard, Joe Gallo, Diana Mardall, Isle Bateman; 3rd – Kerry Jarrell, Gloria Schroppe, Carol Groner.

February play will be at Oyster Bay, first tee time is at 8:28 a.m. and the cost is $35 plus tax, which includes breakfast, lunch and two beverages.  Jean and Doug Falls will be hosting (presuming they find their way back to Carolina Shores from South America).  The signup sheet is on the bulletin board in the POA meeting room.

We are still in need of people to sign up for hosting a couple of months next year so check your calendars.  Member dues are $12 per player; please get your dues to Gloria.

New members are always welcome.  If you would like a “test run” of the group prior to joining, please call Diana Mardall at 910-575-7804 or sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the POA clubhouse.
