As most members are aware, the new floor installed in the clubhouse this past spring has not lived up to our expectations.  For several months, the Board has attempted to negotiate a resolution with the manufacturer that would not require additional expenditure of CSPOA funds.

Initially the manufacturer maintained that the floor was not defective; and, therefore, they were not liable for any costs involved in any remedy.  Fortunately, the interior designer/contractor we have been using was able to convince the flooring manufacturer to agree to an independent evaluation of the floor.  That evaluation supported our claim that the floor did not comply with the manufacturer’s representations.

Thanks to the joint efforts of the Board and the interior designer/contractor, the manufacturer finally agreed to our terms.  In short, they will provide new flooring (a much higher quality floor product than we currently have), they will cover the cost of removing the old floor, and they will to cover almost all costs associated with installing the new floor.

We realize that the past several months have been frustrating for everyone.  The Board appreciates the patience shown by our members.  We finally have an agreement and the new floor is scheduled for installation during the week of January 6, 2014.  Please note that the clubhouse and library will be unavailable for regularly scheduled events during that week.

In an effort to guide us in 2014, the Board has developed a tentative set of goals for the year.  They are as

follows:

          Complete the club house renovation and improvement project;

          Identify and implement needed capital reserve improvements;

          Identify responsibilities that presently rest with the Board and shift them, with the commensurate authority, to staff;

          Increase the number of community-wide recreation activities;

          Develop a manual of policies and procedures;

          Develop a closer working relationship with the Town of Carolina Shores;

          Strengthen our working relationship with the Town of Carolina Shores tree committee;

          Increase community participation on the ACC;

          Establish a closer working relationship with the Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club.

In our constant effort to hold down dues, we need to point out that our club house electric bill is running almost $100 a week.  Please turn on all the lights you need, but PLEASE turn off all the lights when you leave.  Light switches are by the library door, by the front entrance door and between the bathroom doors.  Thank you for your help.

Our annual meeting is on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 3:00 p.m.  This is our opportunity for Board members to report current activities to the membership, for the Board to discuss their goals for 2014, and for the Board to answer questions and address concerns of the members.

In addition, we will hold an election to fill the three vacant seats on the CSPOA Board.  YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A BALLOT AND PROXY STATEMENT BY MAIL – PLEASE FILL IT OUT AND RETURN IT.

Reminder- all group and club leaders need to fill out signup sheets for 2014 to reserve your time and dates for the clubhouse.

CANDIDATES FOR ELECTION TO THE CSPOA BOARD  OF DIRECTORS FOR 2014

Candidates in Alphabetical Order

JOYCE DUNN - I moved to Carolina Shores 11 years ago after retiring as AARP's Associate State Director for North Carolina.  I spent most of my life in the Washington, DC area, but moved away from there 20 years ago because of a transfer with AARP.  The transfer took me to Kentucky, Mississippi, and Atlanta before moving to Raleigh in 1998.  My education includes a B.A. in Communications from American University and an M.A. in Education and Human Services from George Washington University.  Since moving to Carolina Shores I have served on the POA Board (with two terms as President and one as Secretary) and recently completed a four-year term as a Town Commissioner for the Town of Carolina Shores.  I have long been active with the New Friends group, have volunteered with the POA's annual picnics, have edited the Carolina Shores Bulletin and was the co-editor of the annual Homeowner Directory for several years.  I also served on the Recreation and Communications committees, and co-chaired the POA Thanksgiving Dinner for eight years.  Currently I am a Guardian ad Litem for the Brunswick County court system

If elected to the Board of Directors I hope to increase two-way communication between the members and the Board of Directors and encourage greater involvement of members with Board activities and decisions.

Incumbent-Current

CSPOA Vice President

Robert Jones - I retired from the Verizon company in New Jersey where I negotiated contracts and served as an arbitrator for special issues and have been a resident since 2005.  I am a high school graduate with 2 years of college.  I have served as Chairperson on the Communications Committee and the Architectural Control Committee, and also have been a volunteer for the Community Care Team.

I was first elected to the CSPOA Board of Directors in 2010.  In 2011, I was appointed Vice President.  During past elections, I have been re-appointed to the Vice President position up to the present time.  My main job duty is to be a liaison to the ACC.  Due to the difficulty of retaining people for the committee, I was instrumental in having a part-time employee hired to assist the board maintain the quality and standards required per the By-Laws and Deed of Restrictions.  We have updated the methods of operation, and how we handle all homeowner requests and complaints in a timely manner.  At this moment we are updating the "Tree Removal Plan" to be more accessible to the community with some changes that will be clearer to our members.  I have pledged to the community and our board that I will continue to follow the guidelines and rules that our community requires to make us all proud of who we are and what we can do together.

Marlene Stewart - I have been a resident of Carolina Shores since 1998.  I received my BS degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and did my graduate work at West Virginia University.  I taught elementary school for 30 years, and then was a computer technologist the last three years of my career.  While teaching school, I served on numerous boards and committees.  I served as the WV State President of ADK, an honorary sorority for teachers.  I was also a member of the POA where we lived in WV.

Since moving to Carolina Shores I have visited newcomers and started the New Friends group. Also worked on the committee for the picnics, served on the POA house committee, decorating committee, and communications committee.  My husband and I organized the Progressive Dinner for many years.  I also helped organize the potluck dinners at the POA, the New Year’s Eve parties, and the Thanksgiving Dinners.

One of the goals I would like to achieve while serving on the board is to see our community have more social events to bring our citizens together.  I also think it is important to listen to our residents on issues they are concerned about.  I hope to keep dues at a low rate, and be fiscally responsible about how we spend your money.  I love living in Carolina Shores, and hope we can continue making this a great place to live.

ACC Corner – Bob Jones, V.P. and Joe Martere, ACC

This new addition to the CSPOA Bulletin will keep you up to date on changes in the procedures of any items in the Deed of Restrictions (DOR) that require approval of the Architectural Control Committee (ACC).  The newest change is in the tree removal requests.  There is a new packet, which the home owner is asked to pick up at the POA office.  It contains the guidelines under which a tree may be removed, a form to be completed by the property owner, which ACC members will bring to the site and a permit form which must be displayed so it is visible from the street.  The ACC asks that you read the reasons under which a tree can be removed before submitting for an inspection.  If you are not sure if the tree qualifies, please call the office and a member of the ACC will get back to you.

Recreation Committee – Pat McKay

Judging by the amount and variety of compliments paid to our committee members, we feel that our POA Annual Holiday Party held on Saturday, December 7, 2013, was a success!  Again, the venue at Sea Trail was beautifully decorated with its elegant Christmas tree, red and green linen napkins prominently displayed in all the glasses, and lovely table centerpieces completing the picture.  Residents gathered together outside the ballroom drinking beverages from one of the three stations and talked with their neighbors and friends before the event.  An extra hour was added to the affair, making it from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., complying with residents’ requests for more dancing time!  Again this year, the Lee Shane Show music group provided a great listening and dancing variety of familiar tunes.  Present at each table were salads, rolls, iced tea and water to temporarily satisfy hungry guests until their table was called to partake of the delicious buffet!  For dessert, the cakes purchased from Lowes Foods were beautifully decorated with winter themes to complete our menu.  Coffee and tea were complimentary as well.

POA Board President, Peter Gulliver, led off our evening with the Pledge of Allegiance and then introduced Committee Co-Chairs, Jeanne and Joe Zalasko to personally thank them for all their efforts towards this party.  Jeanne then thanked each member of the committee, including: Joanne and Jack Bendy, Merrilee Burns, Lillian Capuano, Pat McKay, Eileen Nawara, Ron Pecina, Margie Pettersen, and our POA Board liaison, Mike Riccitelli.

Once again, an especially large thank you goes to resident and manager, John Humphries, and his staff at Sea Trail for all of their efforts to help insure the success of our party....from the ticket takers, bartenders, food preparers and servers, to the table settings and general organization.  We received excellent and pleasant service, and all ran quite smoothly.

Lastly, thank all of you from our community who attended this function and helped to make our holiday season kick-off such a success once again!  The most important purpose of this annual party is for our residents to be able to greet and bond with each other in the true spirit of the season!  By the amount of laughter, conversation, hugs and holiday greetings heard and seen around the room all evening, this indeed was accomplished!  A healthy, happy 2014 is wished to one and all!

P.S. Our Recreation Committee is looking for a few volunteers for 2014.  A few people have expressed interest thus far. If you wish to be considered for a volunteer spot, please phone either Merrilee Burns (579-2044, POA Office) or Pat McKay (579-9550).  We are especially looking for a few men to assist us at functions.

Tennis News Bob Anthony

Hope everyone had a happy, healthy holiday season.  Now is the time to begin working on those extra pounds that we all packed on over the holidays.  A good way to start is by playing tennis with your friends and neighbors.  Come join us for open tennis every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 a.m.  Everyone showing up will get to play and all skill levels are welcome.  See you out there.

Sunday Scramble--Diana Mardall

By the time you read this, the holidays will be over.  I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in 2014.

Seven CSSSG members braved the wintry conditions to play at Crow Creek on December 8, 2013.  They played 9 holes (and I heard they would have liked to quit after 3!).  That evening 29 of us enjoyed cocktails, a delicious dinner and outstanding company at the Tiger’s Eye clubhouse.

It wasn’t really discussed and voted on (you all seem to shy away from the subject), so I remain President, Joe Gallo is still the DOG, and Gloria is Treasurer.  If anyone wants to snatch those positions away from us, please step forward now!

January play will be at Carolina Shores, first tee time 9:32 a.m. and the cost is $25.  Carol and Will Groner will be hosting.  The signup sheet is on the new bulletin board in the POA clubhouse.

We still need people to sign up for hosting next year so check your calendars.  Member dues are $12 per player, please get your dues to Gloria.

New members are always welcome.  If you would like a “test run” of the group prior to joining, please call Diana Mardall at 910-575-7804 or the signup sheet is on the bulletin board in the POA clubhouse.

New Horizons SinglesBetty Bond

A wonderful Christmas party was enjoyed by 18 of our members on December 10, 2013 at the Starz Grill in Shallotte.  The food was excellent and the socializing outstanding.  Those of you who were unable to be with us really missed a good time.

The first meeting of the new year will be held on January 14, 2014 at the POA clubhouse at 5:00 p.m.  Please bring $5.00 to pay the yearly dues.  Madeline Mahony has been our coordinator this past year and she feels that she has done her part and would like to retire.  Madeline served as our coordinator in 2009 and 2010 and volunteered in 2013 because no one else would take responsibility.  Please, give it some thought and volunteer; we would hate to have to disband because of lack of leadership.

Hope to see all of the old members and anyone interested in joining us at the meeting.

Book Discussion Group – Pat McKay

A lively discussion was held at our December 20, 2013 meeting to discuss our book selection, Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard.  This extraordinary account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, was an eye-opener to many who were unfamiliar with this enigmatic president.  This book also gave some interesting insights into the nature of the Republican party in the 1880s, defenses for the criminally insane, medical treatments of the era, and the contributions of Alexander Graham Bell.

At our next meeting on January 17, 2014 we will discuss And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini OR Madame Tussaud:  A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran. There will be a potluck luncheon following the book discussion.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.

Carolina Shores Bowling League – Mal MacRaild

Our bowling league completed the first half of the season at Little River Lanes.  The Penguins are in first place and the Terns are in second.  Linda Pennington has high average for the ladies and Vince Hammeril has high average for the men.  We look forward to starting the second half in January.

Needlework NewsMargie Pettersen

The Needlework group assembled at the POA clubhouse on Monday, December 9, 2013.  Afterwards, the group went out for lunch at the Sunny Side Up Diner in Calabash.  This group meets on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit or crochet.

The Needlework group recently donated 37 handcrafted knitted and crocheted items to Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center.  As part of hospice’s annual holiday gift program, the scarves, hats, bed jackets, shawls and 25 afghans will be put together with other donations, wrapped and then distributed to in-home patients, as well as patients at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.  We always appreciate donations of yarn to be used for our charitable works.  At the present time, our supply of yarn is low and donations will be gladly appreciated.  Call Margie Pettersen at 860-307-3175  if you have yarn to donate.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help . After we meet, we eat our bag lunches and share a dessert. Margie Pettersen will be providing dessert at our next meeting on January 14, 2014.

Please note:  this group meets in the POA board room so as not to interfere with the exercise group in progress.  Please enter through the POA office.

New Friends Flo Pflaster

Barbara Roth and Rose Mary Jones organized a fantastic pot luck luncheon for our December meeting.  We shared delicious food and yummy desserts and a fun sweater modeling event and trivia contest.  Pat Golden’s handmade sweater won the prize for the best one and we had lots of laughs guessing the answers to the questions.  The prizes were crocheted and knitted items all made by Barbara-great job!

Mary Pritchard and her helpers collected $20 from community residents to provide a full Christmas dinner for those in the county who are needy.  $1285 was collected!  The annual half marathon will be held on January 11, 2014 to benefit the South Brunswick Interfaith Council Food Bank.

Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!

New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced.  Everyone is welcome.  You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.  Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.

January’s meeting will be led by Joyce Dunn.

SIXTY FOUR Thank yous, Carolina Shores.

Your generosity in donating $1285 to the fund for Christmas Dinners to families in the South Brunswick area provided 64 turkey dinners with all the trimmings to those families in need.  The dinners were distributed on Saturday, December 21, 2013 in time for the big day and the families were more than grateful that someone cared about them.  May God continue to bless you all with good health and happiness in the coming new year.
