Message from the BoardAl Franklin, President

Hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day picnic.  We had good weather and fun visiting with our neighbors.  Thanks to Marlene Stewart, the recreation committee and the volunteers for all their efforts.  A JOB WELL DONE BY ALL.

Let us not forget that  Memorial Day was established to honor the individuals that served in the military.  Thank you to those residents who served in the military so we could have the freedoms that we enjoy today.  We also want to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Since the early years of the Carolina Shores development, the Carolina Shores Property Owners’ Association (CSPOA) has relied on the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) to enforce the Declaration of Restrictions (DOR).  For the most part, the Committee relied on the honor system for voluntary compliance with the restrictions.  Property owners were expected to abide by the rules.  If and when violations did occur, other members were expected to report those violations by filing a complaint with the CSPOA.

Times have changed.  It appears that voluntary compliance with the DOR doesn’t work as well as it once did. Additionally, neighbors have become much more hesitant to report violations even if those violations compromise the health and safety of our community.  Violations of the restrictions have become much more commonplace while the reporting of those violations has nearly ceased altogether.  Within the past two years, members have become much more vocal in their criticism of the CSPOA for lax enforcement.  At the same time, many members have vigorously fought attempts to enforce the restrictions.

The Board has concluded that the community is at a crossroad.  Does the majority of the membership support aggressive enforcement of the DOR or does the majority support lax enforcement, if any?  It is not a simple question.  Your seven-member Board cannot decide this issue for the community.  The community as a whole must decide.  The decision raises many questions . If enforcement is stepped up, dues will undoubtedly increase.  We cannot rely on a volunteer committee to perform those duties.  There will certainly be more legal issues and more legal challenges to enforcement.  On the other hand, failure to enforce the restrictions will most likely result in legal action against the CSPOA for not enforcing the DOR.

The Board will dedicate the July quarterly meeting to a discussion on this matter.  The eventual decision will impact every property owner in Carolina Shores.  We encourage members to carefully consider the consequences of this decision and bring your ideas and suggestions to the July meeting.

We have had some inquires concerning the regulations for pets.  Some residents say that the regulations are not being followed.  If you have a pet keep the following in mind:

1.      There is a leash law.  When walking off your property your dog must be on a leash.  Do not allow your dog on others property.

2.      Always pick up after your dog.

3.      Please be considerate of other individuals when walking your dog.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

As you know by now the  pool is open. Below is the pool schedule:

General hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

Lap swimming - Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.

Water Aerobics - Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Adult Swim - Tuesday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Must be 18 or older.

Carolina Shores Beautification Committee

The beautification committee worked diligently to get the pool garden up and running so it would be ready to greet you when the pool opened on Mother's Day.  Many thanks to Ron Pecina and Larry Edwards who helped transport and get 40 bags of mulch to where it should be.  We are always looking for volunteers to help with the garden.  The Garden Club has officially adopted this area.  We will soon have plant identifiers to keep you in the know.  If you are interested, please contact the beautification committee:  Ellen Pecina, Kay Forbes, Joanne Bendy and Carolyn Bosman.

New Friends Barbara Roth

The May 13, 2014 meeting was led by Barbara Roth with a tribute to Mother's day.  All were asked to bring their special family pictures.  It was a wonderful time learning how others grew up and how they raised their families.  Some even shared stories of their 4 legged furry family members.  It was interesting to see how we all ended up at Carolina Shores.  This was followed by lunch at Crab Catchers in Little River.  Twenty four ladies were at the meeting and fifteen  continued on to lunch.

Future events were discussed:  June 10, 2014 will be at Sunset Beach.  Meet near the pier at 10:30 a.m. and you can bring your significant other.  Bring your own lunch and what you would like to sit on.  There will be no leader.

For July 8, 2014 Barbara Jones is looking into a movie in Shallotte.  Jersey Boys - the Movie is coming out on June 20 so she is hoping it will be in Shallotte by then.  Information will follow.

Joyce Dunn is looking for a few good additions to the Care Team to help residents with short term assistance.  Call Joyce to volunteer.  This is a great opportunity to help others and meet new people.

New Friends (and old ones) meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. to have a nice time socializing.  It is a great way to find out what is going on in the community and meet more neighbors.  Join anytime; there are no dues and no officers, just friends.  One of our goals is to help the needy by bringing a non -perishable item for the SBIC food pantry.

Needlework News Margie Pettersen

The Needlework group assembled at the POA clubhouse on Monday, May 12, 2014.  This group meets in the POA board room* on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit or crochet.  We have no officers or dues and you’ll find us around the table chatting and working.  We stop at 11:30 a.m. to eat our bag lunches and share a dessert brought by a member.

This group is currently looking for yarn donations to support our local charitable projects.  With the donated yarn, we make hats for newborns, baby sweaters, and blankets to be distributed to new mothers at the Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia.  In addition, we donate lap blankets to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.  We’d like to thank Mary Anne Ketcham for her recent donation of yarn, needles, and patterns to the group.  On May 20, 2014 Eileen Nawara and Barbara Roth represented our group at a Volunteer Appreciation Tea given by the Brunswick Medical Center.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help you.  Our next meeting will be on June 9, 2014.  Margie Pettersen will provide the dessert.

*Please enter through the POA office to access the Board Room.

Carolina Shores Quilting Guild Nancy Sneska

Our May business meeting was led by Halla Cramer.  The Guild voted on the presented list of nominees who will be installed at the June meeting.

A luncheon for the Oak Island Quilters followed the meeting.  A challenge of patriotic blocks was judged by attendees and winners were awarded prizes.  We shared delicious foods and fellowship as we do on a yearly basis with our sister group.  Many beautiful show and tells were presented by both Guilds.

Our June meeting will be held at the POA clubhouse beginning at 10 a.m.  New officers will be installed and we will continue our last meeting of the year at the Sunny Side restaurant in Calabash.

Our Guild is open to anyone interested in learning to quilt.  Beginners are always welcome as we have many mentors willing to teach and assist.  Come join us at our September 12, 2014 meeting

New Horizons SinglesJune Wilkinson

For our May meeting we met at the picnic area for good fellowship and food.  We thank Alice Johnson for getting and bringing the delicious fried chicken.  The members brought delicious side dishes to be shared.  We had perfect weather.

Our June meeting will be our last get together for the summer.  We will be going to Arbor Landing on June 10, 2014.  It is on Route 179 in Ocean Isle Beach.  Lunch will be provided for us and we will get a tour.  The time to be there will be 11:30 a.m.  Call Anne Walsh 579-8048 for information.  We welcome any singles to join us.

Book Discussion Group – Margie Pettersen and Pat McKay

At our monthly meeting on May 16, 2014, we discussed The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe.  This touching true story chronicles the relationship that develops between a mother and son as they cope and deal with her diagnosis and treatment for pancreatic cancer.  During her ongoing treatment, Mary Anne and Will Schwalbe discuss the books they are reading and reminisce about their favorite books from the past.  Mary Anne Schwalbe had a remarkable spirit and valiantly struggled to continue to do things that were important to her while she was battling cancer.  This book was well received by the group and many members who shared stories of book discussions with their parents, similar books with a reading theme, and references to books they’ve read.

At our next meeting on June 20, 2014 we will discuss The Fever Tree by Jennifer McVeigh.  This historical fiction book gives an interesting perspective of diamond mines, epidemiology, and life in South Africa in the 1880s.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you!
