Message from the BoardAl Franklin, President

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Our next event is the Holiday party at Sea Trail.  The tickets will be available in a few weeks.

These tickets are available to any member in good standing who will attend the party.  If you are not planning on attending the party, please DO NOT pick up tickets just because you feel you deserve them.  Last year we had 60 tickets that were never used even though the individuals had picked up the tickets.  The POA had to pay for the dinners, which totaled over one thousand dollars.  The tickets are numbered and assigned to the individuals so we know who got tickets and did not use them.  If you pick up tickets and you have something that later prevents you from coming, please notify the POA a week before the party so we do not have to pay for dinners that are not needed.  We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

You may have noticed that the last phase of the landscaping around the POA building is being completed this month. This phase consists of new plants in the flower bed at the corner of Country Club Road and Route 179.

Some pet owners are not picking up their dog's droppings in the area along Calabash Drive, where the golf course crosses between #6 and #7 fairways.  As stated in the Declaration of Restrictions:  "No animals or livestock of any description, except the usual household pets, shall be kept on any Lot.  Any droppings or other damage upon any Lot, caused by said household pets, are the animal owner’s responsibility for cleanup or repair.  Dogs are to be kept on a leash when off the owner’s property."  If this restriction is not adhered to, it could result in a fine for the pet owner.  Please be considerate of your neighbors and cleanup after your dog.

Please remember the budget meeting on November 3, 2014 at 7 p.m.in the POA clubhouse.

Happy Thanksgiving and if you are traveling, please be safe.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

It’s back by popular demand – the CSPOA will once again host a community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse.  The POA Board provides turkeys and beverages and the guests who attend each bring a side dish or dessert to share.  This special celebration brings together those of us in the community who do not have travel plans for the holiday.  If you have company at your house, you are welcome to bring them to our dinner.  Reservations are required.  To reserve a spot call Joyce Dunn at 575-0825 or send an email to tozbeach@hotmail.com.  When you reserve please let us know what dish you plan to bring – we do this to ensure that we don’t end up with 20 pumpkin pies, but no vegetables.  See you there!

Book Discussion GroupMargie Pettersen and Pat McKay

On October 17, 2014 we met to discuss our reading selections: China Dolls by Lisa See OR Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth.  Both books were well received by the group and described as informative, eye-opening insights into little known lifestyles.  Lisa See described all the brutality of the Japanese invasion of China in 1931, the conditions of the Japanese internment camps, and the exotic life of nightclub dancers with historical accuracy.  Jennifer Worth’s memoir provided chilling examples of the dire poverty and conditions of London’s poorest people.  Many had followed the BBC series and noted how closely the TV depiction of the raw daily life in London’s East End mirrored the stories relayed in the book.

At our next meeting on November 21, 2014, we will discuss two books about famous 19th century female humanitarians: One Glorious Ambition: The Compassionate Crusade of Dorothea Dix by Jane Kirkpatrick OR The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, which details the lives of Angelina and Sarah Grimké.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to commit to reading all of the books to be part of the group.  If you are intrigued by the November choices or the topic, feel free to drop in and share your perspective and insights on either book.  In months when there are two books to be discussed, you may read one or the other, or both, if you so choose.

In December, in addition to our regular book discussions, there will be a talk by local author, Lenke Brown at the home of Margie Pettersen.  Lenke lived in Hungary during WWII and the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and her book recounts her life and immigration to the U.S.  Call Margie (860-307-3175) if you are interested in reading her book, A Struggle to Survive, and listening to the author talk.

Carolina Shores Quilting GuildMary Dilettuso

The Carolina Shores Quilt Guild met on October 10, 2014 in the POA clubhouse.  Eighteen members were present.  Co-President, Kay Forbes, called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.

The Guild is still selling tickets for our beautiful 70” x 84” patriotic quilt benefiting the Veteran’s Welcome Home and Resource Center in Little River, SC.  Tickets are one for $1.00 or six for $5.00.  If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please call Halla Cramer at 579-9449 or Beverly Henderson at 575-5683.  The winner of the quilt will be selected at our November 14, 2014 meeting.

We are still committed to our group’s charity, the Ronald McDonald House.  Once a year the group takes the quilts we have made and travels to Duke University Hospital to give the quilts to the children there.  Kathy Welker shared some of our groups’ history with the Ronald McDonald House and encouraged us to keep this tradition alive by making a small quilt and donating it.

Marilyn Anderson will be showing us how to make a quilted casserole holder in November - just in time for the holidays.

Our guild meets on the second Friday of each month, September – June at 9:30 a.m. in the POA clubhouse.  We also meet on the fourth Friday at the same time for a workshop and fellowship.  Guests and new members are always welcome.  No experience is necessary; our members are always willing to help.
