Message from the Board – Al Franklin, President

Well next week is Labor Day, which is considered the last week of summer.  If you are like everyone else, you are saying where has the time gone.  Hope you are dealing with all the rain and do not have any damage due to the rain.  The POA building was not so lucky, as some of you know.  We had a roof leak, which has been repaired as well as the ceiling.

The July 28, 2014 quarterly meeting had a good turn out and the Board of Directors thank you for your attendance.  The comments, suggestions and survey results from the property owners have been turned over to our Advisory Committee.  They will review and suggest to the Board which direction we should take with the Declaration of Restrictions.

I understand that our community has several new residents, the "Foxes".  I am talking about the four legged animals.  The wild life experts say not to feed them and they could be rabid.

The last phase of the landscaping around the POA building and the flower bed by the wall on the corner of Country Club Road and Route 179 will be completed this fall.

Brunswick County will be hosting fall free week at the Brunswick County Landfill September 15 - September 20, 2014. Brunswick County residents/property owners may dispose of all materials except for regular household trash or new construction debris, free of charge, at the County Landfill.  Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  If you have any questions, call (910)253-2524.

Recreation Committee Barbara Roth

Trivia was a big success with 12 teams participating. Click here to view photos of the event.  The committee met Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse.  We will be meeting in the future on the first Thursday of each month and presently are looking for two or three men to join the committee so we can have the input of activities from the male point of view.  The meetings are generally only about an hour long, but you can be very helpful to our filling the fun for our community.  Contact Sharon Donahue at 579-9017.

We are looking for a pre-lit Christmas tree in good condition to be used in the POA clubhouse.  We also need decorations.  Anyone who has anything we could use, please contact Sharon Donahue at 579-9017 or Barbara Roth at 575-8185.

Watch the bulletin for upcoming events!

Sunday Scramble Diana Mardall

Sunday, August 10, 2014, was a beautiful day (morning) in the neighborhood – if you stayed in Carolina Shores.  For the Sunday Scramble Group playing at The Thistle – well, they got rained out after nine holes, so they lunched and drowned their sorrows in the bar.

Next month we play at Farmstead on September 14.  First tee time is 8:09 a.m., cost is $35 and hosts are Bill and Betty Weaver.  The signup sheet has been posted on the bulletin board in the POA clubhouse, or you can call Bill and Betty at 579-7952 and let them know you want to play.

Remember, if you sign up to play, but can’t play, please call the hosts to let them know.  It’s frustrating to spend a lot of time on pairings to have them thrown askew because someone forgot they’d signed up (or didn’t feel like playing).  If you can’t remember whether or not you signed up, please make that phone call to find out.

New members are always welcome.  If you would like a “test run” of the group prior to joining, please call Diana Mardall at 910-575-7804.

Renegade News Debbie Creamer

Chairpersons for our regular weekly play in September are Betty Weaver and Pat Soule.  Tee Time for September is 8:34 a.m.  Check signup sheet weekly in case of changes.

Christmas Golf and Dinner will be Thursday, December 4, 2014.  There will be more information later.  Chairpersons are Linda Mullins, Debbie Creamer and Debbie Courtemanche.

Weekly Play:  Renegades play every Thursday morning at the Carolina Shores Golf Club.  This is a friendly and sociable group.  If you have just moved to the area and enjoy golf or have lived here for years and have decided you would like to play golf in a league, you may contact our President, Martha Hannon, at 579-8194 or Debbie Creamer at 575-8163 for more details.

New Friends – Flo Pflaster

The August 12, 2014 meeting of New Friends was led by Margie Pettersen.  We introduced two new members of our group, discussed upcoming POA events for August, and then everyone told what they had done this summer.  We are a really active group and enjoy our family adventures!  A large group then went to one of our favorite lunch places, Patio’s, in Little River.

New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced. Everyone is welcome.  You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.  Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.  Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!

The September meeting will be led by Barbara Jones.  She is hoping to plan a movie and lunch day.  Keep your eyes open for an email announcing the event.

Garden Club NewsJoanne Bendy

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 1:00 p.m.  The theme of the meeting is New Beginnings.

Wine and Roses?  Did you know that there is a reason that rose bushes are grown at the ends of grape vine rows?

Come and learn about grape horticulture and wines of the Carolinas.  Vicki, the owner of La Belle Amie Winery, will be our guest speaker.  Program and meeting will be followed by a wine tasting.  Non alcoholic beverage will also be provided.

Other programs this year are:

Gardening with roots, raised beds and containers

Firewise Landscaping - Learn about plants that are highly flammable!

Palms - What grows in this area and maintenance?

Mosquito Control - Do you know how many varieties live in Brunswick County?

Ask a Master Gardener - Bring your questions.  Also, a plant exchange

Hope you will join us for a year of learning and socializing.

Needlework News Margie Pettersen

The Needlework group assembled at the POA clubhouse on Monday, August 11, 2014.  This group meets in the POA boardroom* on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit or crochet.  We have no officers or dues and you’ll find us around the table chatting and working.  We stop at 11:30 to eat our bag lunches and share a dessert brought by a member.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help you.  Our next meeting will be on September 8, 2014.  Flo Pflaster will provide the dessert.

*Please enter through the POA office to access the boardroom.

Carolina Shores Quilting Guild Mary Dilettuso

The first meeting of the Carolina Shores Quilting Guild will be on September 12, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in the POA clubhouse.  At this time we will have a short meeting followed by a round robin session where members will be taught double bindings, a variety of stitches, and a simple nine patch.  Supplies will be provided.  There will also be a material exchange.

If you have ever thought of trying to begin to quilt, this is the class for you.  Our Quilt Guild welcomes new members and we have many experienced quilters ready to share their knowledge with you.  We always have lots of fun, whether it is on a outing to the quilt shops, quilt shows, or just sitting at our sewing machines learning new things.  Please come and see what we're all about and stay for a brown bag lunch in the kitchen.

Book Discussion Group – Margie Pettersen

On August 15, 2014 we met to discuss our book selection, Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver.  The reviews on this book were mixed.  Several people loved the book, the characters, and the way that the author brought to life the story of a young Appalachian woman who is overwhelmed by the sight of thousands of monarch butterflies alighting on the trees of her family’s farm.  Others were put off by the flowery prose and lengthy descriptive passages.  For those who are interested in monarch butterflies, another good book on this topic is Butterfly’s Daughter by Mary Alice Monroe.  After the meeting, we presented our recommendations for books to read for future discussion and enjoyed each other’s company at a potluck luncheon.

At our next meeting on September 19, 2014, we will discuss two books that delve into the topics of orphans, displaced children, poverty, and childcare: The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline OR Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario.  Kline’s historical fiction book describes the journey of young orphaned children who were hoping to be adopted by farm families in the West.  Nazario chronicles the life of a young man who has left Honduras to find his mother in the United States.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.

Here is the list of books to be discussed over the next year.  There’s a little bit of something for everyone!  You don’t have to commit to reading all of the books to be part of the group.  In months when there are two books listed, you may read one or the other, or both, if you so choose.  If there’s a book on the list that you’ve read and enjoyed, feel free to drop by for the discussion.
