Message from the BoardAl Franklin, President

I hope all who attended the Christmas party enjoyed the evening.  I know there were some problems with a shortage of food for the last few tables.  We do know that some individuals took more food than they should have for one person, which contributed to the food shortage.  We are working with Sea Trail to get some adjustment for those who had little or no food.  The recreation committee is looking at procedures to prevent this from occurring next year.

A couple of weeks ago there were individuals going house to house in Carolina Shores selling products.  It turn out to be a scam.  Someone called 911 and the sheriff arrived in time to catch the individual.  The residents who had purchased the product got their money back.  These residents were very fortunate.  Please remember to call 911 when something of this nature happens.  Remember all that looks and sounds good is not always good.

As the POA enters into 2015 we have a couple of large projects that we want to accomplish.  One project is The Declaration of Restrictions and the other is to begin a community wide beautification program.  To help us accomplish this we will need residents to serve on committees.  So give it some thought and be a part of helping to improve our community.  You can call the POA office if you are interested in serving on a committee.

I want to thank those who did serve on a committee this past year and hope you will continue to serve.

Be safe and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

NOTE:  you should receive your 2015 POA invoice in the first week of January.  If you do not receive it or cannot pay it in full by March 1, 2015, please call the office.  Payment plans are available, but you need to let us know.  There will be a late fee if not paid by March 1, 2015 and subsequently, if not paid by June 1, 2015, a lien will be placed on the property.  It is better to communicate early with us any problems you may have in paying your dues.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

On February 7, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. our POA will elect four directors.  The following candidates have filed nomination applications for these positions

CANDIDATES FOR ELECTION TO THE CSPOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 2015

Candidates in Alphabetical Order

Jack Bendy- Resident since  2010. Graduate of Hamilton High School, Hamilton, NJ.  Two years Graduate of Life Underwriting Training Council, New Brunswick, NJ.  2013 Graduate of NC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program. EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:  I have had an interest in landscape and gardening most of my life and have planned and have created lawns and perennial gardens.  As a Brunswick County Master Gardener, I have knowledge of ground maintenance, both turf and plants.  I have been and would continue to strive to improve and maintain the appearance of the area around our POA building, picnic, tennis courts, pool areas and POA common areas.  BOARD MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I have served on the POA Board since March 2014 and have been responsible for maintaining the grounds as well as negotiating a contract and hiring our current landscaper.  I also served on the Recreation Committee in 2012 and 2013.

Al Franklin- Resident since 1996. EDUCATION: AA-Business Management.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Retired US Government and Real Estate.  I was a field supervisor for 5 years while employed by the US Government.  I managed my family’s electrical contracting business.  I served as President of my POA in Maryland and Virginia.  I have served on the Carolina Shores ACC Committee for four years.  I have been on the Carolina Shores POA Board for fourteen years and am currently serving as President of the POA.  I know the history of the POA and the guidelines of the Declaration of Restrictions. BOARD MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Keeping the dues down and ensuring that all the ACC requirements are followed.  BOARD AND COMMUNITY AREAS OF INTEREST: President, Vice President and Architectural Control.

Peter J Kirkby – Resident since 2006. EDUCATION:  B.S. Applied Mathematics. B.S Physics and M.S. Computer Science. EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: During many years of consulting at the highest levels in the financial industry it was necessary to be able to communicate at all levels.  Hopefully the skills I have learned can be utilized on the POA Board.  If elected I would strive to ensure that all POA members get fair, impartial and honest consideration for their and the community's issues and it is therefore my wish to be able to support at every level.  My time has been committed to raising money for veterans who have physical or financial needs.  Previously I had chaired the Architectural Control Committee.

Diana Mardall- Resident since 2001. Educated in England and moved to the US in 1970. EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:  I was involved in and worked with HOA management, governance and property management in Maryland for 16 years.  I currently work at a nearby community and for four years, I was one of the developer's representatives on the HOA Board of Directors.  In the same community during the last 10 years I have been a member of the Architectural Review Committee.  I am currently a member of the Carolina shores POA Advisory Committee.  If elected, and working with the other Board members and the ACC , I would like to help maintain the aesthetic appeal of the community, which would also assist in keeping property values at their highest level possible.  I would like to take a more active role in the direction Carolina Shores goes during the next few years and being a Board member would help me do this.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITYMary Pritchard

This community's well know generosity was shown again this year with over $1400 collected for the South Brunswick Interchurch Council project to give 150 families a Christmas Dinner in a box.  Many, many thanks to many, many people who donated the $20 cost of a dinner--or more.  The dinners were distributed at the regular food pantry session on Saturday, December 20, 2014 to all the families who came that day.  May God continue to bless you all for your thoughtfulness toward others.

Mexican Train - Elaine Southard

The Dominos Mexican Train group is looking for new members to join them on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the POA clubhouse.  Start time is 10:30 a.m. and the game ends at 2:00 p.m.  Participants bring their lunch and there is a hostess each month who brings dessert.  There is a 'regular' list and a 'sub' list of players.  Contact Elaine Southard at 575-0536 or Jackie Orwig at 579-2921 for more information.

Tennis NewsBob Anthony

Happy New Year everyone!  Now we can start working on those New Year’s Resolutions.  A popular resolution that we all make is to get in better physical shape.  A good way to begin is by playing tennis every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at open tennis, which is available to all POA members in good standing.  Just show up at 9:00 a.m. and bring a tennis racquet and wear court shoes (no running shoes)—everyone showing up will get to play.  Come on out and enjoy some fun and exercise with your friends and neighbors.

Happy New Year!

On December 9, 2014 nineteen of us gathered at the Crow Creek clubhouse to have a Christmas lunch together.  There was good fellowship and good food.  We thank Alice Johnson for arranging that for us and for her good work for us this past year.

Our next meeting will be January 13, 2015 at the POA clubhouse at 5:00 p.m.  There will be fellowship and food to share.  We will be selecting a coordinator for 2015 to facilitate the activities the members will be planning.  Come on out and see your friends and “break bread” with us.  We are a fun group who would welcome any singles to join us.

Garden Club NewsDebbie O'Dell

The January regular meeting of the Garden Club will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, with an informative program on “Palms and Maintenance”.  Presented by Tony Cooper, Coastal Gardens of Little River.

In all the hub-bub and good cheer of the Christmas Season, don’t lose sight of this date:  Wednesday, February 11, 2015.  That’s the date for the Garden Club Scholarship Card Party.  This is the main fund raiser for this so worthy a cause, scholarships for graduating Seniors from West Brunswick High School.  Last year we were able to give five scholarships.

The Scholarship committee is counting on the Garden Club membership to gather all the card and game players we know to come to Mulligan’s Restaurant in Little River where we will have the whole of the newly refurbished downstairs for our event.

The menu will include imaginative salads, rolls and butter, coffees and teas and two choices of desserts for $20 with $4 of every ticket going directly to the Scholarship Fund.  There will be a silent auction so the committee also is counting on the membership to donate “theme” type baskets and gifts solicited from our favorite local businesses.

We are now putting our newsletter, Carolina Shores Garden Club, on the POA website.

New FriendsFlo Pflaster

Our "new friends" gathered on Tuesday, December 9, 2104, for a festive celebration of the upcoming holidays.  The event was chaired by Mary Pritchard and Barbara Roth.  Mary created many challenging games for all to play.  Revelers were scratching their heads over twisted questions about Santa and his elves.  The game of charades had everyone laughing at the drawing board and acting (or lack thereof) abilities of the participants.  A covered dish lunch was prepared by the attendees, which is always a great success with our talented cooks.  All had a great time and were still smiling as they went home with their prizes.

New Friends meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the POA clubhouse.  You do not have to be new to join in; there are no officers and no dues, just a lot of fun people gathering together for a couple hours of friendship.  We have different fun events each month and then choose a place to go to lunch.  The January meeting will be hosted by Marlene Stewart and will involve un-decorating the Christmas tree that was set up in the clubhouse in November by New Friends.

Come and join us in January and try to bring a non-perishable for the food bank.  The holidays are over, but people are still hungry.  This is one of our ongoing charitable challenges.
