Message from the BoardAl Franklin, President

Hope this month’s bulletin finds everyone well and dealing with this heat.  I would like to bring members up to date on some of our projects.

1. The Rules and Regulations document that the Board has been working on is in final review by the Board.  The next step is for the document to go to our attorney for review, which should be next week.

2. The beautification project at Gate 2 has been delayed and should be back on track in about a week.

3. There are plans to put hard wood mulch in the flower beds at the POA office next month.  This will improve the appearance of the area.

The Town of Carolina Shores has decided not to continue with the POA/HOA committee.  They see no need or purpose for this committee.  Keep in mind that the election for Town Commissioners is in November of this year. Look at the candidates and please vote, especially if you want a change.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

Wheel of FortuneLynn and Larry Darby

Interesting sight:  Wheel of Fortune airing on July 1, 2015 brought a surprise to most of Carolina Shores' long time residents.  Bob Davis, previously lived on Oakbark Court, spun his way to the top winner and solved the bonus puzzle.  That's Bob on the far right.   Congratulations were sent to him on Facebook from us.

Needlework NewsMargie Pettersen

MCj03012760000[1]The Needlework group assembled at the POA on Monday, July 13, 2015.  This group meets in the POA Board Room* on the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. to sit and knit or crochet.  We have no officers or dues and you’ll find us around the table chatting and working.

Twenty-five shawls and three afghans were donated to the Brunswick Community Center and will be distributed to local families in need.  Please consider donating yarn to our group so that we may continue to support our charitable efforts.  Any yarn, any weight or color is appreciated.  Many thanks to Jackie Orwig who donated needlework thread to the group.

If you’re new to the community and love working with your hands, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to be experienced to join us; we have members willing to help you.  Our next meeting will be on August 10, 2015.  Loretta Ebanks will be bringing dessert.

*Please enter through the POA office to access the Board Room.

New FriendsFlo Pflaster

The July 14,  2015 meeting of  New Friends was led by Joan Masters with help from Mary Timothy and Carla Urban.  She discussed how she makes earrings and gave out handouts about this craft  The three ladies then worked with all of us to design and make a pair of earrings from the abundance of beads and other accessories they had brought.  It was great fun to pick and choose from the huge selection and demonstrate our creativeness!

We went around the room introducing ourselves as there were a few new people.  This is always fun finding out that someone else comes from the area where you once lived!

After the meeting, several ladies went to Sunny Side up for lunch.

Next month Eileen Nawara will lead the meeting.  She has recently become CPR certified and will teach a basic course; this will NOT be for certification, but it is a useful skill to have for all of us.

New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced.  Everyone is welcome; you do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.  Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.  Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!

Book Discussion GroupMargie Pettersen

MCj04399110000[1]On June 19, 2015 we met to discuss our two reading selections, Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland OR Guests on Earth by Lee Smith.  The first book was a beautifully written historical fiction book about the Canadian artist Emily Carr, who spent most of her career in the Pacific Northwest.  People noted her bravery, perseverance and fortitude in her daring treks into unfamiliar land, and her commitment to the Native American people of the area.  Although a few people felt that the book was difficult to “get into,” most agreed that it was a worthwhile read.  Our second book was also historical fiction and centered on life in Highland Hospital, a sanitarium for the mentally ill in Asheville, NC in the 1930s and 40s.  This place was ahead of its time in the compassionate treatment of its patients, which included celebrities like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda.  Again, a few readers remarked that the book was difficult to read, partly due to the subject.  Overall, both books were enlightening and the two authors took great lengths in researching their subjects.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to commit to reading all of the books to be part of the group.  If you are intrigued by the selection or the topic, feel free to drop in and share your perspective and insights of the book.  In months when there are two books to be discussed, you may read one or the other, or both, if you so choose.

At our next meeting on August 21, 2015 we will discuss An Invisible Thread:  The True Story of an 11-year old Panhandler,  A Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting by Laura Schroff, Valerie Salembier, and Alex Tresniowski.  We will also be selecting a new list of books to be read for the subsequent year.  A potluck luncheon will follow.
