Message from the BoardAl Franklin, President

Here it is May already.  With all the rain we have been having, it is difficult to get out and enjoy the spring season.  I hope May is a better month for outdoor activities.  Also, with all this rain the lawns and weeds are growing fast.  We have many vacant homes in our community where the yards may not be maintained.  If you notice any property not being maintained, please call the POA office so we can get the situation corrected.

One of the activities for this month is the annual picnic.  It is scheduled for May 24, 2015.  Please try to attend and enjoy the time with friends and neighbors.  Marlene Stewart and the recreation committee have put a lot of time into this picnic, so let’s be there to show our appreciation.

The POA quarterly meeting will be held on May 4, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse.  The Board will be giving dates on upcoming projects and we will have time for questions and suggestions.  Hope to see a good turnout.

The Board approved the appointment of members for several of the standing committees as specified in our Bylaws.  The committees are:

Advisory - Director Diana Mardall, Chairperson Carol Ann Davis, Jackie Orwig, Linda Pennington, Debbie O'Dell, Donna McCarthy, Larry Darby and Elliana Fetsko;

Recreation - Director Marlene Stewart, Chairperson Sue Hensler, Charlotte Csernecky, Barbara Roth, Barbara Hartnett, Sue O'Reilly, Arlene Limpert, Joanne Bendy, Carla Wagner and Mary Ann Williams;

House - Director Joyce Dunn, Chairperson Cheryl Brush, Lana Golden and Nancy Northrup;

Communication - Director Joyce Dunn, Chairperson Teddy Altreuter and Martha Hannon;

Architectural - Director Peter Kirkby, Chairperson Joe Martere, Eva Jensen, Ron Pecina, Rich Gagliano, Larry Edwards and Jim Poe; and

Audit and Finance - Chairperson Kerry Jarrell, Frank Pritchard, Dick Boyle and Lynn Harbold.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

ACC CornerJoe Martere, ACC Chairperson

With the coming of spring and warmer weather, it is time to clean up our properties.  Hopefully, the rain will quit and we can get this done.  In the upcoming weeks the ACC Committee will be checking the community for infractions to the Declaration of Restrictions regarding yards.  I will be informing those owners whose yard needs a cleaning.  Please cooperate and keep your community looking good.

Reminder:

Before doing any alterations to the exterior of your home such as painting, roof shingles, adding shutters or new windows and doors, you must complete an Addition/Alteration Form from the POA.  The forms are also available on line.  When completed, it can be dropped off at the POA office, mailed to the office at 17 Lakeview Court or e-mailed to the office at cspoa@carolinashores.net.

Due to concerns from the Board of Directors regarding some additional rules to the Declaration of Restrictions, real estate signs can now be placed on unapproved lots, but this could change in the future.  The DoR, Section 6 Subsection 18, does state that a sign needs to have approval before being placed on any lot.  Please have your real estate agent go to the office first before placing a sign on your property.

The Town is no longer giving out Tree Removal Applications to the residents of the community of Carolina Shores.  The ACC Tree Removal Application and the Town Tree Removal Application are now part of the same package for our community.  The ACC in now processing ALL Tree Removal Applications and will notify the town.

The POA held their Annual Volunteer Appreciation Gathering on April 19, 2015.  Joyce Dunn was chairperson of the event and did an outstanding job.

Pictures are posted on the website at http://www.carolinashorespoa.org.  Click on photos and select 2015 Volunteers Appreciation.  This is a good way to share with family and friends.  Thanks to all the volunteers  who keep things going in our community.

Seasonal TreeMarlene Stewart

If you haven’t been to the POA Clubhouse lately, you have missed one of the new projects members are working on.  There is a tree on the porch and it is decorated for the different seasons and holidays of the year.  It is a wonderful way to greet people as they come to the Clubhouse.

Sharon Donahue has taken on this project and she has been assisted by Ann Filipski and Margie Pettersen.  She welcomes anyone else who would like to help.  The next tree will be a summer/beach theme.  If you have any decorations to donate for the tree, or would like to help, contact Sharon Donahue at 579-9017.

PicnicBarbara Roth and Marlene Stewart

Your recreation committee is again busy making plans to fill your days.  The Memorial Day picnic is the next event for your pleasure.  It will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at the picnic grounds from 2:00 to 5 p.m.  You must obtain tickets for each member of your family so we know how many we need to feed.  Tickets will be available for pick up at the POA office from the 4th of May through the 14th of May.

This year's picnic is going to be a great event.  It is being catered by Jerome's in Shallotte.  All you need to bring is a dessert to share at the share table.  We will have entertainment by Lisa Snow who will do a patriotic sing-a-long and some Karaoke.  She is one of our neighbors with a great talent!

REMEMBER TO OBTAIN TICKETS IN ADVANCE IN ORDER TO ATTEND!  NO EXEPTIONS.

Why Tickets for the Picnic?

Each year the POA is experiencing a loss of money on the events that include food (picnic, Christmas Party).  While we want all our residents to come and enjoy those events, it is necessary to know how many are planning to attend.  Even with tickets we are losing revenue.  People don’t acknowledge their commitment.  This is the first year we are going to use them for the picnic.  It is very difficult to estimate how many will attend, and last year we had way too much food.  So if you are planning to attend the Annual Picnic on SUNDAY May 24 at 2:00 p.m., please get your ticket at the office.  All tickets are numbered with the name of the person using it.  You may have someone else pick up your tickets, but your name must be on the list.

Also being planned is a music bingo, so watch your bulletin for future events.

New FriendsFlo Pflaster

The April 14, 2015 meeting of New Friends was led by Carla Urban.  She invited Sue Ellen Bennett and Lynn Darby to the meeting.  Sue Ellen is a participant in the Relay for Life.  It is sponsored by the Calabash Presbyterian Church.  They are holding the event at West Brunswick High School on May 1-2, 2015.  She is selling raffles and luminaries to support the fight against cancer.  Contact her at 269-8835 to see how you can help.

Lynn is very creative, and has written and illustrated many children’s books, as well as making innovative gift items.  She displayed many of these, describing how she comes up with ideas.  She has several videos on YouTube and a website, lynndarbycreations.com.

After the meeting, several of us went to the newly opened Bagel Dock in Calabash.  If you haven’t visited the new restaurant, it is highly recommended!

New Friends meet monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced. Everyone is welcome.  You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others.  Please remember to bring a non perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.  Mark your calendars and read this column monthly so you don’t miss out on these fun events!  Barbara Jones will lead the May meeting.

Note from Lynn:

Dear Margie

I had a good time at your meeting and everyone was very receptive and supportive.

I  missed Marlene, of course, who also had a hand in the invite.

I'd like to ask for visits to YouTube under 3 words: Lynn   Darby   Creations to give me more views and hits.  I appreciate everyone's help  and Thank you.   Books are available at Sunset Beach River Marketplace, Pelican Books, Amazon.com or directly through me.

MCj04398570000[1]Our April meeting was well attended.  We celebrated birthdays for Helen Morrison and Ann Walsh.  There were two rounds of trivia.  The questions were related to events for the year each was born.  The food was excellent as usual with plenty for all.  We thank Jean Mann with help from Carla Urban for organizing a fun evening for us.

We will meet May 11, 2015 at the picnic area near the pool.  The time will be 4:00 p.m.  In the event of rain we will be at the POA clubhouse.  Pat Ferstler will bring chicken.  There will be many side dishes to share.  We are a fun group who welcome any singles to join us.

Book Discussion GroupMargie Pettersen

MCj04399110000[1]On April 17, 2015 we met to discuss our reading selection:  Me Before You, a poignant book about an irascible quadriplegic and the woman hired to care for him.  The group had high praise for this book and it led to a great discussion of coping with illness, dying with dignity, and the quality of life for the terminally ill.  Many said this “haunting” and “fascinating” book would resonate with them for a long time.  The well-drawn characters, humorous scenes, and love from Louisa that enhanced Will’s life added to make this a top rated book and a club favorite.  The movie version of this popular title is in production and will be scheduled for release soon.

The book discussion group meets monthly in the POA library at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month and always welcomes newcomers.  If you love to read and discuss books, this is the group for you.  You don’t have to commit to reading all of the books to be part of the group.  If you are intrigued by the selection or the topic, feel free to drop in and share your perspective and insights of the book.  In months when there are two books to be discussed, you may read one or the other, or both if you so choose.  Our next meeting will be, May 15, 2015.

Here is a list of the books to be discussed by the group in the upcoming months:

May-A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison

June-Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand OR Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall

July- Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland OR Guests on Earth by Lee Smith

August- An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-year old Panhandler, A Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting by Laura Schroff, Valerie Salembier, and Alex Tresniowski

In August, we meet and select a new list of books to be read for the subsequent year.
