Message from the Board – Al Franklin, President

Speed Limit 25 Royalty Free Stock Photography - 160757Most of you who go to the pool know by now that the drain pipes by the pump house are in and functioning.  The irrigation system has been installed and the project will be complete once a few more plants are in place.  I hope you noticed that a concrete walkway has been installed from the parking lot to the picnic table area.

Another project in the planning stages is the pending approval for a pavilion over half of the picnic table area.

If you notice that a yard is not being maintained on a regular basis, please contact the POA.  It could be that the house is not occupied, it could be that someone is ill and can’t get out to do the necessary maintenance or it could simply be neglect.

By now everyone should know that you should bring you own noodle to the pool.  We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

We have had some phone calls about the sign at Gate 10.  The sign was removed to install the new drain pipes. The sign was put back but not placed deeply enough to secure it.  The flag and the pole were also removed during this project.  We are working toward a resolution with the Town of Carolina Shores to have the sign correctly installed as well as the return of the pole and the flag.

Architectural Control Committee – Joe Martere, ACC Chairman

During the month of July, the ACC inspected the unimproved (vacant) lots within our community in an effort to maintain and/or improve our property values.  Owners of some of these sites were sent a letter requesting them to clear the undergrowth and remove fallen or dangerous trees. So far, over 30 lot owners have been notified and those who have responded have been agreeable to having the lots cleaned.  We thank them for their cooperation.  This is an ongoing process that will continue through the end of the year.

On the matter of requests for signs placed on your property, the Board has approved a new requirement for signs of a “protest” nature.  These guidelines will be sent out in a blast e-mail.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS CHRIS ARROTTI and MERRILEE BURNS

Men's Golf Association Activities - Kerry Jarrell

http://www.cliparthut.com/clip-arts/479/golfer-silhouette-clip-art-479553.jpgOn July 14th and 21st, the Carolina Shores Men's Golf Association held its President's Cup Tournament.

The President's Cup determines the Association's champion golfer of the year.  Twenty-three golfers

participated in this event, which was held on consecutive Fridays.  Golfers were flighted into three

flights.  For both days of the Tournament the format was individual low-net.  The winner of the C flight

and overall winner of the President's Cup was Joe Gallo, who shot a sizzling 129 for the two days.  Joe's

name will be entered on the President's Cup trophy which will be on display in the Carolina Shores

Golf clubhouse.  Joe was followed in the C flight by Leo Jarmusz, who at age 97 shot 138.  Other

winners in the C flight were Pat Eagan and Jack Bendy.  In the A flight the winners were, in order, Jim

Rogers, with a 139, Pete Larkin, Kim Roeder, and Abe Glover.  In the B flight, the winners were Bob

Fyock with a 132, Jim Burke, Mike Donahue, and Mal MacRaild.  Congratulations, guys.

In the upcoming months, Association members will be participating in the Carolina Shores Golf and

Country Club Championship, the Ryder Cup Tournament against the team from The Valley Golf Club,

and the annual Turkey Shoot the week before Thanksgiving.  The Association hosts regular league play

every Friday.  A signup sheet is posted at the golf clubhouse.

The Association invites golfers of all skill levels to consider the benefits of joining our group.

Membership in the CSMGA is open to residents of the Town of Carolina Shores over 18 years of age

and to any members of the Carolina Shores Golf and Country Club.  Contact Kerry Jarrell, 575-2103,

for information.  The Carolina Shores Golf and Country Club is still providing very affordable

membership programs for avid golfers as well as occasional golfers.  Contact the Course to see which

level of participation works best for you.

Tennis News – Bob Anthony

http://images.clipartpanda.com/tennis-clip-art-tennisservevx8.gif

If all goes well, this time next year we should have a new surface on our tennis courts as well as an overlay of pickle ball lines on court 4.  We are in that time of year when the hottest temperatures and uncomfortable air (dew point) are upon us.  It is very important to continue to drink copious quantities of water and sport drinks when working and/or playing outside.

Remember that open tennis occurs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30 a.m. for the remainder of the summer.  We will begin open tennis at 9:00 a.m. on Labor Day, September 4th, 2017.

Carolina Shores Bowling League – Jim Ratcliff

Greetings from the Carolina Shores Bowling League.  Last year, we were made up of 14 teams, and look forward to adding more teams this year.  We have a lot of new neighbors in the Carolina Shores area.  Come join us.  We normally bowl a 26-week season on Tuesday evenings at Little River Lanes in Little River, SC.  We begin practice at 5:30 p.m. weekly, and start bowling at 5:45 p.m.  Normally we finish up no later than 8:15 p.m.  We have bowlers of all skill levels in our unsanctioned “fun” league.  The cost last year was $14 weekly, and we may experience a very minor increase this year.  We concluded the season in March, and followed up with a banquet at which we awarded over $4,600 in prizes.  We are planning our organizational meeting at Little River Lanes on August 22nd at 5:45 p.m.  At our meeting, we will elect officers for the new year, review our rules and season schedule, and organize our teams for the coming season which is expected to begin on September 12th.  We also plan to take a week off during Thanksgiving and again at Christmas, allowing our members to enjoy the holidays.  It really is a fun season spending a night out each week with friends and neighbors.  Some of our members follow bowling with a bite to eat at various local restaurants. We look forward to seeing you at Little River Lanes on August 22nd at 5:45 p.m.  You may contact me with any questions via email at: Jnavsc@hotmail.com.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

Book shelf blank spines, empty binding stand on wood textureThe Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group met on Friday, July 21st, at the POA library.  This month we read two books, When I Married My Mother by Jo Maeder and Monsoon Summer by Julie Gregson.  When I Married My Mother was a memoir written by a woman who left her New York career to care for her elderly mother whose health and memory were failing.  Monsoon Summer was a sweeping tale of a young couple who met in Britain after World War II and struggled with cultural differences after they moved from her home in England to be near his family in India.

Our most important meeting of the year is coming up on August 18th!  After discussing the book, The Golden Son by S. S. Gowda, we will compile our reading list for the next 12 months.  Each member will submit one title to be included on our list.  If you are a member but cannot attend the August meeting, you may send your book choice to Pat McKay before August 18th.  A potluck luncheon will be held after the meeting.  As always, the Book Discussion Group is open to any interested residents of Carolina Shores and we welcome all new members.

The New Friends group has decided to reinvent itself and come up with a new focus.  So, our August 8th meeting will be an open forum for ideas on ways we can better meet your sense of community.  A few of us have sent out personal invitations to the newer members of our neighborhood and we hope many will attend.  All current and former members are encouraged to bring ideas and we urge new potential friends to come and let us know what your interests are.  No ideas are too big or too small to consider!  Bring a snack and bring a neighbor!

New Friends meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse unless otherwise announced.  Everyone is welcome.  You do not need to be new to attend.  There are no officers or dues, just a friendly group of people who enjoy being with others and sometimes going out to lunch afterwards.  Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item for the SBIC pantry.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has 22 people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me.  If you want to be a part of this team, or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know.  When a call for help comes to me I reach out to the members on Nextdoor.  I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get!  It really doesn't take much to volunteer.  An occasional ride, help with a small chore at home, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on Nextdoor to request help.

Thanks,

Flo Pflaster
