Message from the Board – Al Franklin, President

By the time you read this, the pool would have opened.  I am sorry for the mess with all the digging.  It seems each time the Board makes an effort to improve things we encounter problems from years ago when things were originally built.  We hope to have this all cleared up in a few weeks.

A contract was signed this week to have a concrete walkway built so that our members who are handicapped can get from the parking lot to the picnic tables.  The walk way will be six feet wide.  This will allow for two wheel chairs to pass each other. We are hoping that it will be finished in time for the picnic this month.

The Board is working on getting a bid for the construction of a roof over half of the picnic table area.  Also, we are planning on marking one or two of the tennis courts for pickle ball.

We are always looking for help from the members, so join a committee and be part of the fun.

I am always hearing members complaining about one thing or another in the community.  They complain but are never willing to call the POA or come to a meeting to discuss the problem.  On May 15th, 2017, we had our quarterly meeting which lasted 45 minutes.  We had eight members in attendance.  Not one person was there to mention any problems anywhere in the community, but members get on the Next Door website and complain about many things.  If these members would take 45 minutes each quarter or pick up the phone and call the POA with their concerns, things would be better.  So, if you don’t attend meetings or call the POA for help, please do not complain.  Don’t be part of a potential problem.  If the problem or concern merits attention, please stay off social media and come forward and contribute to a potential solution.

Advisory Committee – Diana Mardall

Per the Carolina Shores By-Laws, “The Advisory Committee shall be comprised of members representing each of the various "sections" of Carolina Shores. This committee is intended to be responsive to the lot or condominium unit owners' wishes in regard to any area of concern. It is to report to the Board on any area. It shall hold meetings from time to time as its members shall determine”.

I am the Board liaison to the Advisory Committee, if you have an area of concern you would like the Advisory Committee to investigate please do not hesitate to contact me.   Once our review is complete, the Committee then gives its findings and recommendations to the Board for their action.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

Book shelf blank spines, empty binding stand on wood textureThe monthly reading selection for the Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group was Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman.  This heartwarming story about a woman rediscovering herself after a personal crisis received mixed reviews by the members.  Some felt that it was a delightful tale and a nice change from other books that we have read, while others thought the story was difficult to follow but got better towards the end.

The Book Discussion Group meets at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of each month in the POA library.  All Carolina Shores residents are invited to attend.  The selection for next month is Black River by S.M. Hulse.

Needlework News – Eileen Nawara

Garden Club – Jane Boyle

Image result for free flower clipartA lovely luncheon at Brunswick Plantation on May 10th, coordinated by Kay Craig, was the Garden Club’s end-of-the-year event. It was a beautiful day where we installed our new Officers for next year:  President, Jane Boyle; Vice President, Joanne Bendy; Secretary, Jeanne Zalasko; and Treasurer, Kay Craig.

At this luncheon, we also honored four West Brunswick H.S. Seniors and presented them each with a $500 scholarship.  The recipients were Madalynn “Haley” Long, Kyle Miller, Olivia Miller and Sadie Smeltzer.

We also awarded a special thank you gift to long-time member, Kay Forbes, who over the years has contributed so much to our community and our Garden Club.

Many thanks to Jeanne Paff who served as our President this past year, Teddy Altreuter for her past two years as Secretary, and Kay Craig who served as Treasurer the past two years and kindly agreed to do one more year!

We are looking forward to next year, beginning on Sept. 13th.  Our Program Co-Chairs, Marlene Eick and Margie Pettersen are already working on some very interesting programs and we have all the other committee chairs in place.  The newly elected Board is eager to work with Garden Club members for an exciting, fun year.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sept. 13th and please encourage your friends and neighbors to check us out!

Carolina Shores Quilt Guild Gloria Gustavson

Close-up of woman's hand stitching quiltingMay 12th was our last formal business meeting for this season.  We will be meeting again in June for our end of year luncheon and installation of officers.  Our Guild participated in a ‘challenge’ from the Oak Island Quilters on May 10th.  The theme was “Sewing Thru the Seasons”.  We each received a mystery patch of material to create a 12 ½” square.  Inez Barrett won for the Summer Scene, Halla Cramer won for Winter and Diane Rosa won for Spring.  Although our group is small, we came on strong for this challenge.  Way to go ladies.

The Quilt Guild is open to everyone of every skill level.  We meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month September through May, 9:30 a.m. at the POA.  If you are interested or have questions, you can call me at 575-2238.

New Horizons – Carla Urban

MCj04398570000[1]Our May 11th meeting was held at the picnic area where we had our yearly outside get together.  The weather could not have been better.  The weather along with the great chicken and all of the sides that the ladies of the group provided made for a very nice event.  We all ate as much as we could and enjoyed chatting with each other.

The next meeting will be held on June 13th at the POA club house at 5:00 p.m.  As you can tell, we are all about having good food along with friendly conversation.  The group is open to all singles in the community so please feel free to join us at the club house.  We are always open to new members.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster Care Team now has 22 people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me.  If you want to be a part of this team, or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know.  When a call for help comes to me I reach out to the members on Nextdoor.  I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get!  It really doesn't take much to volunteer.  An occasional ride, help with a small chore at home, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on Nextdoor to request help.
